Game Summary
What starts as a simple flappy-style arcade game slowly evolves into a chaotic multi-phase boss survival experience.
You begin with nothing more than pipes, a jump button, and 5 health — a clear nod to simpler times in early arcade games. But as you survive longer, the game refuses to stay simple. New mechanics layer in, enemies arrive, upgrades drop, and eventually a full boss fight takes over the screen — all while the original flappy gameplay never disappears.
This game is about how simple games used to be, and how quickly complexity can grow when systems start stacking on top of each other.
Relation to the Theme: “Simpler Times”
- The game starts extremely simple: jump, dodge pipes, survive.
- Each phase adds one more layer, mimicking how classic games evolved from basic mechanics into overwhelming challenges.
- Old-school inspirations like Flappy Bird and Donkey Kong are intentionally remixed into one escalating experience.
- By the end, the player is juggling:
- Flappy physics
- Random upgrades
- Barrel hazards
- Bullet hell patterns
- A regenerating multi-phase boss
The theme is expressed through gameplay progression, not just visuals or story.
Game Phases
Phase 1 — Simple Beginnings
- Classic flappy-style gameplay
- Dodge pipes
- 8 starting health
- Jump sound and background music set the tone
Phase 2 — Arcade Chaos
- Donkey Kong enters the screen on a moving platform
- Drops barrels that:
- Roll off platforms or
- Fall through unpredictably
- Exploding barrels drop random upgrades:
- +1 Strength (damage)
- +1 Health
- -1 Health (risk/reward)
- Pipes continue spawning during this phase
Phase 3 — The Boss
- Pipes and Donkey Kong remain active
- A full boss fight begins:
- 200 HP
- Regenerates health over time
- 3 behavior phases:
- Phase 1: slow movement, single shots
- Phase 2: faster, random direction changes, faster healing
- Phase 3: burst fire, fastest movement, aggressive regeneration
- On death, the boss explodes in a cinematic chain of effects while still moving
